Here's the Tale Being Told:

Photo and description courtesy of Tee D Ponder: This photo came from Global Marine Drilling in St. Johns, Newfoundland. They actually have to divert the path of drifting icebergs away from oil rigs by towing them with ships! In this particular case, the water was calm and the sun almost directly overhead so that a diver was able to get into the water and click this picture.  They estimated the weight of this iceberg at 300,000,000 tons! Pity the Titanic!

6/14/2002 - The Real Story!
After having this picture on my site for several years (hit count is at 600), I just found out that the tale told below is totally wrong. In fact, the picture is not real. It is a digital composite by Ralph Clevenger, a nature and underwater photographer who finds the stories circulating about his "impossible" picture amusing. Click Here for details

6/17/2002 - Another Update .. seems my cousin Bruce does contract work for a company in St. Johns and a friend there tells him that the 'towing icebergs' story below is actually true! Only the picture is unreal. ... Interesting, no?

I tried to thank Laila for the info, but the email address that she put in my Guestbook is apparently misspelled ... thanks for the info, Laila!
