Keeping a Bonus Reserve

A funny thing happened a couple of months ago. Party Poker sent me an email, offering a 20% bonus on any deposits up to $500! Wow! I drop in $500 and get a $100 bonus! Great! But the problem was that I didn't have $500 in my Neteller account at the time. By the time I transferred $500 from my checking account to Neteller, the bonus deadline was past. LESSON LEARNED: KEEP WHATEVER YOU CAN AFFORD IN YOUR NETELLER ACCOUNT FOR UNEXPECTED BONUS OFFERS. I left the $500 in there, earning whatever the meager interest is on money market accounts these days, but had it ready for the next bonus, which came Thanksgiving week.

About a week before Thanksgiving (2004), I got another of those Party Poker emails. Seems like they usually do it around holidays and sometimes just at the end of a month. It's probably based a little on when they notice the low action times to be. At any rate, they offered 20% and I had $450 in the Neteller, so I dumped it in. They gave me a $90 bonus that required that I play 630 hands during the next week to qualify. It took me something like 7-8 hours to play the 630 hands and I made an extra $160 while doing it!

Then, along came Paradise Poker, offering 10% bonus up to deposits of $500. I moved $500 from Party Poker to Neteller, then from there to Paradise. Got the $50 bonus that required that I play 500 hands. About 6 hours later, I had qualified for the $50, plus had won an extra $120!

I'm not just bragging here, I'm trying to make a couple of points. First is the title of this chapter -- keep some money available to quickly pop into the poker site when they offer the next bonus. The second goes back to chapter 11 -- that time spent qualifying for bonuses usually results in winning poker. It's true for me, anyway. I think it's the psychological aspect of playing to make a certain number of hands, without a real concern on whether you win. I play fewer hands, get sucked into fewer losing situations, and seem to almost always win when playing to qualify for a bonus.

Another strange situation that I noticed -- after qualifying for the bonuses, I attempted to continue playing in the same manner. I'm not sure what changed, but I lost little by little for several hours, so quit playing to come back another day. There's just something magical about the time spent playing for bonuses!

NOTE: I've got Yahoo email and I notice that these bonus emails often get identified as spam and are put into my Bulk Folder. If you have a similar spam-filter, and if you have the time, you might want to scan through your spam each day to see if you have any from Paradise or Party Poker. I always look especially close at my spam as we get close to holidays.
