Sit 'N Go Mini-Tournaments and Tournaments
Some websites call the Sit 'N Goes and some call them mini-tournaments - for the purposes of this chapter, I'll go with the name Sit 'N Goes (sg's). Whatever you call them, they're a FANTASTIC way to have a bunch of tournament-style action for a couple of hours, but for a set amount of money.
I've been playing mainly $5 and $10 sg's, with an occasional $20, and doing great. I come in "in the money" (either the top 3 or the top 4) about half the time and #1 about 1 out of 4. On FullTiltPoker, they have either 9-player (one-table) or 18-player (two-table) games, with the one-table paying the top 3 and two-table the top 4. At Paradise, they only have 10-player games and pay the top 3, with the purse naturally being a little higher because of the extra player. I think (and Howard Lederer agrees with me - see Howard's input further down the page) that sg's are great practice for tournament play, especially the two-table games at Full Tilt.
Between sg's, I've been trying a tournament every now and then. If you'll recall from earlier chapters, I didn't do very well in tournaments in my early playing days, but thought I'd try again after having experienced many different types of games and many hours of practice. I've been keeping a record for two months and have placed in the money in 4 out of 28, so that's 1 of 7 .. not too bad I suppose. Haven't made any big money yet, but still trying.
Below, I've included my list of notes that I've compiled during my sg/tournament play. I keep these on the side of my screen, with the intent that I should look over there now and then, but I generally get too involved in the play and forget to look until just after my last all-in. I'm putting them here in their raw form for you to read or ignore as you please. Below that, I have a link to some words from Lederer on the value of sg's and how to play them. Here's my list:
