A few years ago, a friend of mine wrote a mystery novel "Cassadaga". That was when I first heard about Cassadaga, Florida, a little town West of Daytona Beach that was founded over 100 years ago by psychics and mediums to provide a home for psychics and mediums. Since we now had a "new" RV and wanted to try it out on a short trip, Joyce and I decided to wander up to see what all the fuss was about. We stayed in a very nice Passport America park, the International RV Park & Campground, on International Speedway Boulevard in Daytona. Cassadaga was just a short drive from there. The pictures of the RV in Chapter 43 were taken in the campground.
Well, Cassadaga really turned out to be a neat little town. As promised, there are a bunch of people there willing to tell you all about your past, future, and give you advice on how to make your life better. Joyce went to a very nice, 93-year-old medium named Eloise Page. Ms. Page has been in Cassadaga for many years and, in fact, is also a teacher and taught many of the younger mediums that live and work in the quaint little town. We found Ms. Page through the bookstore across the street from the Cassadaga Hotel (which, incidentally, is inhabited by the ghost of George Colby, founder of the town). In the bookstore, they keep a list of who's "on call" each day, making it very convenient to find someone to consult with. Ms. Page told Joyce many interesting and surprisingly accurate things during their 45-minute visit. Nothing earth-shaking -- we still don't know what numbers to pick in the lottery -- but Joyce enjoyed it and left Ms. Page's feeling satisfied with her reading. Below are a couple of pictures from Cassadaga -- on the left is a peaceful garden and on the right a photograph of Colby's ghost moving through the Cassadaga Hotel. What did I do while waiting for Joyce and Eloise to complete their visit? Well, I sat on the porch of the Cassadaga Hotel with my author friend, Al Wulff, trying to determine which of the passers-by were real and which were ghosts. Later, we spent some time browsing through the bookstore and gift shops in the town. All in all, a fun little trip to try out the new RV.
